    a taste of nostalgia...

Yesterday I  went out and bought a local Easter delicacy -- a half-pound "Allfather's Egg" -- they come much bigger than that but the 1/2 pound size cost all the money I had left when I got done buying the necessities at the Farmer's Market today. Well, necessities and a small box of xcross buns from the Italian Peoples' Bakery.

Allfather's Eggs are a local confection, made from the same recipe for over 100 years by one single Trenton, NJ company that only makes them for a few months out of the year. They are dark chocolate covered eggs with a dense coconut filling with a yellow "yolk" center. It might be my imagination but the yellow coconut yolk tastes a little different, kind of buttery. They are decorated with icing flowers on the top. A local treasure of legendary status, only a few places still carry them, one is at the Trenton Farmer's Market.

When we were kids, an Allfather's egg was always the center-piece in our Easter baskets. People from this area ship them to friends and family all over the world that are nostalgic for this taste of home. The one I bought today is going out to my brother in York, PA. Hopefully they won't all sell out, and I will still get one for myself.

In this household, we don't actually celebrate Easter, but I usually indulge myself in one or more of the food traditions from my childhood at every holiday, and savor the memories they evoke.

So I would like to wish everyone a generic,

    all-encompassing,

    Happy Spring Holiday,

    whatever you choose to celebrate.

And remind you all to take some time to savor your own good memories of holidays past. One of the most precious things about holidays is the sense of continuity they bring us, and of the connection with the past.

  • Those eggs sound fabulous!!! My dh bought my son Peeps for his basket, knowing that he doesn't like them (but I do). Funny man.

  • i need sugar! happy easter!

  • Are those peeps I spy?  Cute as a background, but ick to eat:)

I remember the egg hunting..the matching dresses my mother always made us and the special "gift" we got in our baskets.  Stuffed animals as young kids, tapes later etc.  And the best treat...deviled eggs! :)

  • my mouth is watering...i haven't thought of these in so many y ears...my grandmother (nona) used to get these for us every Easter as a treat...I am quite jealous...Sassy

  • I'm a little late to get you wishes, but I appreciate them anyway.  I'm sitting in the midst of a blizzard...dang, spring in the mountains.

I decorated my holi-tree for Spring and stuck some Easter-related things under if for the kid...candy in plastic eggs, mostly.  We don't really do religious holidays...other than that thing we do at Xmas time. *wink*  But we did have peeps...and I got to see my son's blue tongue (a little curious about what the heck does that!).

I'm still waiting for all your spring projects...  Has the weather been cooperative in your part of the country yet?  I'm in Northern New Mexico...and what looks like a purple bruise on the weather map of Colorado is just reaching down to tickle the area with 50mph winds (I don't care what the meteorologists say...I live in a trailer, and I can tell how fast the wind is blowing! lol)

    Thinking sunny thoughts...GFW

  • What a neat post!!!!   Made my mouth water...but also brought back a lot of neat memories for me.  I don't celebreate "Easter" as such either....but just look at it as the beginning of the new life Spring brings...so I share your sentiments.

Blessings to you and yours in this time of renewal!!

  • Happy Belated Easter.  I worked so tradition has flown out the window   I remember eggs similar to that
