I am well on my way toward having a veggie garden…

Bernie was off from work today and I talked him into renting a tiller. He tilled the plot for the veggie garden (9′X18′ – twice as big as we had in other years!) and also a couple of large bare spots in the back yard which needed to be reseeded with grass seed.

Since it is supposed to rain at least a little bit each day for the next few days, I ran out to the store tonight and got some grass seed and the weed barrier cloth for the garden. I got the grass planted with my yard lights on, so I don’t know how even it will be, but at least I won’t have big brown spots in the lawn soon.

Now I have everything I need for the veggie garden except the plants! Well, I have 2 tomato plants for the garden, that I bought the other day when we got two patio tomato plants to put in pots on the patio (where else?)

I figure I have room for 12 tomato plants (I guess that means I will need 6 more tomato cages, too, since I only had 6 from before) and two more rows of other plants, probably an assortment of peppers. I may put a hill of bush cukes (his) at one end and a hill of zucchini (hers) at the other end, too. Isn’t that funny? Bernie loves cucumbers and I don’t really like them, and I love zucchini and he doesn’t like it!

There really isn’t much else I can grow in this space, the soil is pretty bad in that part of the yard. I have added some stuff to it over the couple of years I planted in that spot, but it still needs more. And to make matters worse, it wasn’t tilled for 2 years. I had surgery in the spring the year before last, and a broken foot last spring so I haven’t planted a garden for 3 years. I decided to move the compost bin, which was next to the garden, and that gave me twice the space for a garden as well as lots of good compost to mix in the soil there.

Dave mowed our lawn yesterday and said that a woman he mows for has a nearly new mower she never uses (because she pays him to do her lawns) and she wants to sell it. So I guess after we do the house/mortgage thing next week Bernie will probably look into it. Gonna drop my old one off at the shop this weekend, but I don’t think the diagnosis will be very good.

Tomorrow morning the housing inspector will be back to re inspect the house. That is the last of the inspections we need to have. And after that, any repairs or renovations will be decided by us and done on our schedule. Phew, that feels good just thinking about it.

Well, I guess that’s about it for me tonight. I need to go put my feet up, and see what’s on the TV.

    g’nite!

  • Cool beans! Hey, plant some beans! Seriously, I have respect for people who can make things grow. Me and my brown thumb kill most green things, and I’m not a dirt under the fingernails kinda gal (which makes me sound really prissy, but I’m not I swear!) so me and gardening… nuh uh. I’ll gladly take the overflow crops off someone’s hands though

  • how fun. I live in an apartment, so no garden for me. It’d be fun to grow carrots for the bunny though.

    Take pictures!

  • oh i wish i would/could make time for gardening!! NOthing better then veggies fresh from the garden.

Hope all is well, the sun is shining here today, and i smiled as my first iris has flowered…I can’t wait for the lillies to burst next, they still have sometime yet though. hmmm, thinking about some porch tomatos here as well, except we have alot of “pissy” kitties that stop by to visit, and i would hate for them to get sprayed..yuck…hehehhe

  • I envy you the time to work in the garden.  My roses are suffering from my lack of that precious commodity.  The work is worth it, though.  Enjoy your garden and your newly-owned home.  I’ll celebrate with you on the 14th!

  • Your garden sounds great!! I need to plant some grass in a bare spot in the yard–just haven’t had time to get out there and do it.
