  • Disaster strikes!

I was editing the custom module on my other site today, and I had several browser windows open. I had gone back and forth a few times between my sites, and somehow when I saved the look and feel of that site, it ended up on this one.

Wiping out everything in my header, custom module (all my links, webrings, everything) my news, counter, javascripts, everything!

I sent an S.O.S. right away to the Xanga team, and John sent me the link to the Google cache. I was able to save the code for the page as it appeared in Google’s cache, from March 11th.

So now I have to restore as much of it as I can, piece by piece. And then I have to figure out what I added and changed in the last 2 months.

It figures this happens when I finally get the site looking exactly the way I wanted it!

And all of this is happening while I am having a nasty headache from a sinus infection. And my dogs are unusually bratty and barky today too.

update: So far, so good. I got a lot of it restored. Still need to re-do some of the links that were my most recent additions. And the links to selected archived blogs. And I need to put the google search box back on the bottom.

I am debating about whether I should put the news module back or not…Not sure I want to keep it now…

And I still can’t get my site meter counter to show up. It works, but it doesn’t show. Anybody have a solution for that? Its doing it on my other site, too.

Thanks to everyone who is cheering me on!

  • That seems typical for Xanga.  It has eaten a bunch of sites over the last few weeks!

Glad you were able to save some of it!

  • That is a true disaster….hope you can restore without starting from point A!

  • Aw shit!!!

  • !!

I know this is closing the barn door, but maybe it’ll help someone reading your comments… but when you log into a Xanga (or any other) site, your browser stores the cookie for that login, and until you close your browser *that* is the login that is used for all activity on that site. The best way to handle working on more than one site at a time is to use more than one browser (not browser window, but browser). Like, use IE for one site, and Netscape or Mozilla for the other. Then you only have one cookie holding one login in each browser.

I’m SO sorry this happened to you. I can only imagine the time and energy you put into your site! Hey, when I get back upstairs to my other computer, before I come to your site again I’ll see if I can find a cache on my computer of your page. If I find it, I’ll save it and send it to you.

  • OH no!!!! I am wide awake and I walk into find disaster!!! Oh my!! sounds like something I would do.. but you on the other hand.. have functioning brain cells that can figure out what to do!! heheheh!! Just had to take a walk through Xanga land.. since sleep is again evading me !!! Yawnnnnnnn!!! Hugs to you .. Rose

  • well all i can say is the site looks great so all your hard work is worth it!
    have a great weekend!

  • Ah, the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune!

    ….my deepest sympaties…

how do you get an actual number to show in the site counter anyway?

To everything there is a season, summer is coming..

  • It’s so frustrating when that kind of thing happens!

What type of counter are you using? I remember John saying a while back that some didn’t work with Xanga… but this is one that worked okay for you before?

Might be worth going to the site you got the counter from and logging into your account there. Often on sites that give you HTML code for counters, a Weather Pixie or whatever, you can get it to show you your code on a subsequent visit, so you could copy the code again. I had to do this today at Weather Pixie because when I saved my stuff from the skin when I redid it recently, I somehow missed out the Pixie bit. Likewise Imood…

  • I haven’t been around awhile, looks like you’re in a real pickle, if I scream will it help ….didn’t think so

You’ll figure it out, I can tell you’re very smart…smile
