mental meanderings of a sunday afternoon…

Spring is finally here.
At least it says so on my calendar…
The Vernal Equinox has come and gone, and I feel no more balanced than I did before.
An old superstition says you can blance an egg on one end at the moment of the equinox.
Not that I would see why anyone would want to do that anyway.
I would rather just make an omelette for breakfast.
When I was in Paris a few years ago I practically lived on omelettes.
Omelettes and fresh baguettes from the bakery on the corner.
They were cheapest, and left more francs for museum admissions and Metro fares.
I was there before the Euro, in January, alone.
But I always wanted to experience Paris in the springtime.
Maybe someday I will take my husband there.
He doesn’t really have much interest, there’s no surf in Paris.
But I think he’d enjoy the City of Lights if he’d give it a chance.
On my calendar it also says March is Womens’ History Month.
A good time to feature a woman songwriter (one of the best, too)
this weekend’s adifrentdrumr’s choice song lyrics is a snapshot of Paris:
He met her in a French cafe
She slipped in sideways like a cat
Sidelong glances
What a wary little stray!
She sticks in his mind like that
Saying “Avez-vous un allumette?”
With her lips wrapped around a cigarette
Yvette in English saying
“Please have this
Little bit of instant bliss”
He’s fumbling with her foreign tongue
Reaching for words and drawing blanks
A loud mouth is stricken deaf and dumb
In a bistro on the left bank
“If I were a painter” Picasso said
“I’d paint this girl from toe to head!”
Yvette in English saying
“Please have this
Little bit of instant bliss”
Burgundy nocturne tips and spills
They trot along nicely in the spreading stain
New chills new thrills
For the old uphill battle
How did he wind up here again?
Walking and talking
Touched and scared
Uninsulated wires left bare
Yvette in English going
“Please have this
Little bit of instant bliss”
What blew her like a leaf his way?
(Up in the air and down to Earth)
First she flusters
Then she frays
So quick to question her own worth
Her cigarette burns her fingertips
As it falls like fireworks she curses it
Then sweetly in English she says
“Please have this
Little bit of instant bliss”
He sees her turn and walk away
Skittering like a cat on stone
Her high heels clicking
What a wary little stray!
She leaves him by the Seine alone
With the black water and the amber lights
And the bony bridge between left and right
Yvette in English saying
“Please have this
Little bit of instant bliss”
- Joni Mitchell “Yvette in English”

***update - Monday AM: I keep trying to add the Xangazon “currently playing” box to this post, but it isn’t cooperating, so since some of you wondered –
This is a relatively new Joni Mitchell song, co-written with old friend and sometimes collaborator David Crosby. It appears on Joni’s “Turbulent Indigo” CD (1994) and also on one of David Crosby’s solo recordings from the same time period, which, incidentally, is where I first heard it.

oh my! I LOVE LOVE LOVE omelettes! I like them with tomatoes, cheese and sausage bits. That makes me hungry for one right now!!! Woo hooo!
I am going to remember the egg thing for next year – do you know if there is something similar for the fall equinox? I want to try it!!!
Have a fun day, love the new background!!
I have missed visiting your site these past few … months? … and I am truly sorry. I liked the story about Paris. We will be in Great Britain in 2006. I’ll see if we can get a day or so to go to Paris as well. It sounds beautiful.
I enjoyed the song. It’s one I am unfamiliar with, but I have always liked Joni Mitchell.
Yeah, it’s Spring here too. And for a change it was actually pretty nice on the weekend and it’s going to be bad during the week.
I think someone forgot to tell Mother Nature that it’s Spring here. It’s 27 degrees today. Yesterday was cold, windy and overcast. Hardly spring-like.
Love your choice of woman musician. I love Joni.
Yes according to the calandar spring is suppose to be here. We just need to get the weather to cooperate.
Never been to Paris…..would love to some day. Until I actually do…I will just keep dreaming.
Hope you have a great day
I’m guessing your weather isn’t cooperating? We had three days in the 70′s…yesterday the high was 47. That’s springtime in th mountains! Right now it is 63, with a predicted high of 73! It is so pretti-ful outside…*sigh* I haven’t been out of the country, except to Vancouver, Canada and Tiquana, Mexico, so if Hubby doesn’t want to go with you to Paris, I’ll happily fill in for him *smile*…just let me pack a bag.
I haven’t written much in Xanga about what I’ve learned about the Awakening…from different sources. I was just going to go through the process, sharing all of that info, as it occurred. Then I realized that there are probably those who don’t know what’s happening…they may just have that feeling, and have no way of pinning it down. I’m glad I wrote it down. *smile* Besides, things were getting a little to interesting for me to ~not~ put it into my journal…even if my inner skeptic says it sounds just a little too hokey…*lol* All I keep thinking is “what a wonderful time to be alive!” And now Spring is here!
I feel like the heat’s been turned up, a couple of notches! Inside as well as out…
I’ll try to spread my weather around, so everyone can enjoy it…
Peace and Love…GFW
Omelets & baguettes sounds yummy. I like your memories of Paris. The song is an excellent companion to them. Joni Mitchell is a musical poet, in an almost old-fashioned way.
Thanks for the encouragement….and congrats to you on your weight losss. I am taking it slow it hasn’t even been 24 hours and I am starvng. Just want to eat…..or munch.
Oh my God, I *love8 Joni Mitchell… thank you for that. I sang along as I read.
There’s lots of stuff in Paris, so there should also be something for Bernie to enjoy. Unless he only and exclusively loves surfs. (They have smurfs though, in France!)…
Been to Paris 10 years ago (school trip) – nice, but expensive! Buy your drink in a supermarket, don’t sit on a terrace in the center…
Joni Mitchell – don’t really know much about her, but don’t think I care about her much… I’ll have to borrow my flatmate’s CSN&Y-albums to refresh my memory about Cosby. As for related music – There’s Neil Young stuff I like, but again – not all of it (Me definitely not a Country & Western person). Should get the CD of his “Dead Man”-soundtrack though!
Are the trees budding out down by you yet ? Here by Sean’s and my apt in JCity the trees are starting to open. This is the longest 3-4wks of the year — waiting for all the new green and color !!
Finally I’m getting caught up on some favorites. I’m so far behind in everything it seems! I loved the truck story. But, just seeing that snow makes me shiver. I don’t think I could ever handle a full winter again being so spoiled here in Alabama!
I stopped by your site..
and I just had to say how much I love it..
You are a wonderful soul and writer…
Blessings to you and yours..Peace..Sheri
