    AAUGH!

    This is just not  fair!

Everyone knows how much I love nature.  How much I enjoy feeding and sheltering any wildlife that wanders into my yard.  How much I respect all of the Goddess’ children…

It was bad enough that the deer ate my roses last summer, the potted plants on my front steps, and the impatiens I planted in the barrel outside my bedroom window, too.

And in the fall they stripped the bark off the brand new Ash tree I planted.

This spring they have been nibbling off every little shoot and bud emerging from the spring flower bulbs I planted in the front yard…

Now they are just pulling them up by the roots and eating the whole things!!

All along the front of the house there are fresh holes in the mulch, and hoofprints, and telltale piles of deer poo on the lawn…

    I love wildlife, I really do…

But I am begining to entertain fantasies of Bambi roasting on a spit!

  • Ooh!  That’s frustrating!!

We had deer at our house in British Columbia and every year the little buggers would eat the tops off my tulips!  All that would be left was a neat line of green sticks.

There are “deer repellent” plants and shrubs you can buy – things that look and smell nice to us but that the deer either won’t eat and (hopefully) if planted next to things they do like to nibble will keep them away.

Try your local garden center – or the ‘net I suppose and look for / ask for “deer proof” plants.

And be happy you have green shoots for them to eat!  lol…  We had MORE SNOW today…  Arg.

  • Oh that *is* frustrating! Maybe it’s time to invest in a fence? *hugs*

  • No no!  No Bambi’s on spits!! ACK!!!  Remember… you WANTED Spring.   Just Kidding.  Hopefully that suggestion of deer-proof plants will work.

  • We just get annoying squirrels and possums in our yard! Do Dolly and Pearl chase deer?

  • awwww!!!! i sympathize for you! shoot them with a rice gun… it will make them think that your place isnt a safe place.. or go to lowes or something and see if there is a repellant you can get for deer,.. they have it for dogs and cats so i see no reason why they wouldnt have it… hope they go away soon!

  • IN Poulsbo, across the sound, in fact the whole Kitsap peninsula is suburb/rural. Lots of wildlife. My stepmom’s sister and her husband have a terrible time with dear. They have to put netting around the fruit trees and the garden. They’ll just help themselves to whatever they can. Even my supervisor (crushguy) who lives on Bainbridge Island ( in Kitsap) is so angry with them because they just love people’s gardens. His in particular.

  • damn those deer and bunnies!

  • just found your site.
i’m addicted to your zen button.

but i bet you get that all the time.

  • um…not that I am not all into Nature and Everything, but I love deer steaks!! And chili!! Of course, we only have hunting in the fall, and I am usually the recipient of someone’s kindness and many choice cuts of various wild game…but my freezer can hold some in the Spring, too! *smile*

Of course, that is only if the rice-shot and repellant plants don’t work. *wink*

    Peace and Love…GFW

  • Hmmm, I’d say that it’s wonderful to have deer around the house (it’s beautiful creatures!), but if they start to be a pest, it’s a different tale alltogether…

Maybe you should get in touch with your local wildlife-inspector (forester?)… It might be that there’s too much deer alltogether in the neighborhood, and that’d lead to disaster aswell.

Yes, without wanting to land in an argument – I am pro-hunting, provided it is done with a plan -wildlife preservation and control- and by skilled people. As far as the image of rich people blasting away at everything that moves: that’s a nono.

And GFW is right – nothing is more honest than a piece of steak of a creature that has lived in the wild! (Alas, it would be perfect when you’d hunt it yourself with bow & arrow )

  • But flower bulbs taste so good! You know me, I say let the deer have it all. Just don’t buy expensive plants & then you won’t be out a lot of money.

  • ROFL . . . here, it’s the wild bunnies . . . they are the bane of my gardening existence . . . .
