Thanks for the well-wishes, those of you who stopped by.

I am feeling a lot better, still a bit tired and worn down, but nothing like a couple of days ago. Bernie and I had a pleasant day yesterday at home, and since my stomach was still so “off” and I hadn’t really eaten anything much at all on Friday or Saturday, I decided to just put the healthy nutrition plan on hold for a couple of days and eat what I felt like (within reason, of course) So yesterday I actually had dinner with Bernie. Cooked the same thing for both of us for the first time in a couple of months. Sure felt good doing that! We had a nice springtime dinner of fresh asparagus, boiled new potatoes in their jackets and a broiled ham steak. I defrosted one of the precious few remaining containers of the home made applesauce I made from the last of our home-grown 100% organic apples we harvested when the developer took down the trees, and we had that with dinner. Yummy.

The Easter Rabbit didn’t arrive at our house yesterday, must have gotten lost with my basket of peeps. No Easter Beagle, either.   But fortunately, Peeps are now available year ’round, so I will be able to have some sooner or later. Today we went out and did a lot of various errands, and since one of them was going to Walmart to get cat food and return a pair of sweatpants that didn’t fit Bernie, we raided the half-priced Easter candy carts there.

Now, don’t panic, Dear Reader, and think I have lost my mind and will willingly throw away all the hard work of the past few weeks for a sugar fix. No way. I am being very sensible (for a change). Bernie got some Easter candy that he likes, and a package of four low carb chocolate covered marshmallow Easter eggs, I think from Russel Stover. Anyway, I ate one of those. It was okay, but definitely wasn’t marshmallow. More like a cream egg, but lighter. I wouldn’t want another. But at least I got to try the low carb candies I keep hearing about. He got some regular chocolate covered marshmallow eggs, I will be sure he saves me one of those whenever he opens the package, too. The rest of the candies Bernie bought are not really anything I like that much anyway. I really prefer quality. Even in junk food!

I did, however, select three choice packages specifically for myself. You see, I know I can trust myself with these things. I have learned a lot about when and why I eat, and retrained my appetite, too, over the past three months. I have learned that I can sample something, and not have to eat the whole thing. If Bernie doesn’t want the rest (not usually a concern when it comes to chocolates) and it is not something I like enough to want to put away and save for later, I can just throw the leftovers out. I can forgive myself for “wasting food” if I just have a bite and throw away the rest, especially if it is something like half-priced Easter candy. This is the reason why I didn’t buy any full priced Easter candy, and waited till after holiday sales. It may sound silly, but the whole “waste” thing is a major issue for me. Which has been very bad, in the long run, for my waist!

So one item I bought was a carton of flavored malted-milk eggs. They were a Disney brand, and came in an assortment of four ice cream flavors — chocolate, strawberry, orange and cookie dough. Malted milk eggs, and their year-round cousins, malted milk balls, were always a favorite when I was growing up. Probably more of my brothers favorite than mine, but I liked them too. (I guess it’s obvious what my favorites were — chocolate covered marshmallows, peeps, and also a couple of others I haven’t mentioned before — spice flavored jelly beans, chocolate covered cream eggs — especially maple flavored, coconut or Cadbury’s, and our own Trenton NJ original, the Allfather’s Egg) But I have never had a flavored malted milk egg, so I had to try them. So I bought the package. And tried them. I had one of each flavor. They were okay. But I don’t want any more. So if Bernie doesn’t like them, I will just put them away and give them to my brother next time he comes out to visit. He likes to have something sweet to much on when he drives home late from here and needs a little wake-up.

But the thing is, I never thought I would be saying this: “I bought a package of assorted chocolate Easter eggs, I tried one of each and now I don’t want any more” ???  And get this, all you ladies who are reading this (’cause I know you can empathize here), it is that time of month when I usually would be ready to kill for chocolate! Even the mediocre kind!!! I must have definitely had some kind of major breakthrough with my new eating habits!

I also got a pack of four Cadbury caramel eggs. They are individually wrapped, as all Cadbury eggs are, and so will present no “open package” issues. Yeah, I guess that’s another food issue with me. Well, the Cadburys are in the closet, and will stay there until I decide I can splurge on a few self-indulgent extra sugar calories. Once I start doing a lot of heavy work out in the yard and kow I am burning off loads of carbs, I can afford to reward myself with a splurge like that now and then. But until then, I really don’t even hear the Cadbury’s calling me. Yep, must have been a definite breakthrough. I had a couple of pieces of Easter candy and I am done for now. Wow. What a concept!

I also got a small assorted package of the Jelly Belly gourmet jelly beans. Those tiny little flavor powerhouses sure can satisfy the sweet tooth quickly with a minimum of damage. Right now they are also up in the closet, but eventually I will put them in a jar up on the shelf over my computer desk. I usually keep some kind of small mints or hard candies or something here for an occasional sweet, but fairly non-damaging, nibble while I am putting in hours at the keyboard working on my auctions or graphic projects.  I have learned the parameters for choosing the right thing for this purpose, too. It absolutely has to be something I will be satisfied with just one or two of. (so no peanut M&M’s ) Preferably individually wrapped, so it takes longer to get to each one. Right now I have a jar that is filled with a mixture of Werther’s Originals (hard butter-toffee-ish candies) and Starlight Mints — those ubiquitous red and white peppermints. It has been there since before Christmas, and is still nearly full. I have yet to meet a person who can pig out on Starlight Mints! it just can’t be done (at least not by me, that is) I am pretty much the same way with jelly beans, especially the really flavorful gourmet kinds – a little goes a long way.

Well, I really didn’t mean to write another “candy blog”. But its not a bad subject for a rainy monday I guess…

We made significant steps this weekend toward moving a bit on the “want list” I posted the other day. We visited a flooring specialty place today and then decided to just go to Lowes about the floors. Bernie looked at the various options I have been considering, we sat down with the guy and asked some preliminary questions, and got into their system for a consultation with the contractor. We should be hearing from the contractor within the next few days to make an appointment for him to come out and look at what needs to be done, get measurements and then we will be able to decide the specifics. We will be having him look at all three of the old tile floors that need to be replaced — kitchen, bath and breezeway, so we can work on both the short-term (kitchen and bath) and the long term (breezeway) planning.

It was really too rainy to do anything about looking at nursery stock or fencing, but we talked over a lot of the options and priorities, and I did a fairly detailed drawing of my master plan, working with a scale map from the survey we had done when the house was transferred to our name last year. And today we got a new shovel. That will replace the old one I broke last week working in the yard and I can get back to work on the mulch and driveway projects. I think I am going to just start breaking up the concrete patio and making a pile of concrete as soon as the weather and my health improve. It is going to take a few weeks of doing it by hand to remove that much concrete, so we can worry about how to get rid of the pieces later,  the main thing is that I get started, now that we have decided to definitely remove the old patio as part of the main prioriities in the yard. They predict rain most of the week, so maybe by the weekend I will be able to call some contractors to get estimates on the installation of a new concrete patio, and recommendations for the grading and drainage underneath.

We also got a decorative curtain rod and a set of curtain panels for our living room picture window. Still no sofa or chairs, and we still didn’t lug the heavy coffee table up from the basement, but at least the half-empty living room won’t have a big naked window anymore. Bernie tells me that he will make more of a decision about the sofa after he finds out how much the floors and yard will cost. When we get the kitchen floor done, we will definitely be getting a new stove. There is no argument there, Bernie is all for it and would have probably got one already if it wasn’t for me insisting on getting the floor done first. Just makes more sense to me to put a new stove in when we have to move the old one out ayway to get the floor done, rather than put in a new stove then have to move it again. Not to mention that the new stove will be smaller than the old stove and I have no idea what the floor looks like underneath (and expect the worst, nowing this house as I do).

So despite feeling like I got hit by a truck at the beginning of it, I guess we still had a fairly decent and eventful weekend.

I hope yours was pleasant and full of whatever makes you happy, too.

I will leave you with pictures of my “Easter Tree” all decorated for spring with pastel ribbons and eggs, and the pastel color wheel tinting the fiber-optic lights. I am enjoying decorating this tree as the seasons change, and at least it takes up some space  inthe living room!

    All done up for Spring!

    – and that is a real ostrich egg on the shelf below.

Happy Easter to those who are celebrating, and Happy Second Sunday in April to everyone else!

As a little gift to you, Dear Reader, and because I am fairly at a loss for fresh inspiration due to the fact that this has been a Week From Hell here in my house (the week started with Bernie coming down with a nasty stomach virus, continued through my email program going haywire and causing me to miss all my eBay correspondence for this week, and ending with me coming down with the same nasty stomach virus — which I am just now beginning to get over) I have decided to reprint the infamous “Peeps Blog” from last year. A few of the links no longer work, but you will still get the general idea.:

Tonight I am thinking about marshmallows…

    because

This year, Marshmallow Peeps turn 50!

So in honor of this auspicious occasion and to celebrate one of my absolute all-time favorite candies, I made this nifty new background for my site.

It started with a picture off this article –

Peeps anniversary article with lots of fun links

and I modified it a bit. I know you won’t be able to see the comments as well again, but you can always highlight them and read them that way.

    Marshmallow lovers unite!

I know not everyone shares my appetite for Peeps. Or marshmallows for that matter.

    Witness this article:

People who need Peeps: It’s scary

One of my old friends used to call Peeps

    Evil Mutant Sponge Chickens!

But I don’t agree with her in the least.

Nor with my husband who swears that eating a 4-pack of the little critters is entirely too much sugar. This particular battle raged on in my house for the longest time, until I finally got a bottle of Lipton Iced Tea, just the regular sized bottle that nobody seems to have any objection to drinking all at once, and compared the nutritional data. Just about the same amount of calories from sugar. And I would far prefer to have something to chew if I am going to take in that much sugar, thank you very much! So give me a pack of Peeps and a bottle of unsweetened iced tea any day.

I believe I am in the minority, as an adult marshmallow lover. Marshmallows are one of my favorite foods, and I truly believe Peeps are one of the more highly evolved forms of the lowly marshmallow that engendered them.

The ultimate expression of marshmallow-ness, of course, is chocolate covered marshmallows, which combines two of the most important food groups in my estimation. If you added a dollop of peanut butter, that would make it a darned near balanced diet!

    Remember my dogs?

(heehee, like I ever stop talking about them long enough for anyone to forget them)

    Even my dogs love marshmallows.

They were raised by a breeder who gives her Pomeranians marshmallows for rewards. She uses the mini marshmallows, but I prefer the full sized ones for myself. So I bite them in half, and half again. Each dog gets 1/4 and I get half. It has become a little marshmallow-eating ritual with us. We haven’t developed a ritual for eating Peeps. The dogs would have to be really good for me to share any of them!

The first year we had our trailer, Dolly (the momma dog-the one who is lying on her back in the picture) discovered the joys of marshmallows toasted on the campfire. She even waits patiently for them to cool enough so she can have them. People at camp do not believe this dog sitting and waiting for a marshmallow. When we walk through the campground and go visiting other campers, she goes nuts over anyone who has marshmallows. People always say “no, no, you don’t want this sweetie, dogs don’t eat marshmallows” and then I have to explain that our “princess” doesn’t know she is a dog.

In the camp store, the marshmallows are kept on a bottom shelf. If I walk in there with Dolly on the leash, she will sit in front of that shelf and look at me with these big sad puppy eyes. She knows exactly where to go each time, too. The camp owners get a big kick out of that.

    Marshmallow Peeps in Popular Culture.

They are more than just a candy, they are a phenomenon.

If you don’t believe me, check out some of these links…or the links within these links…you can spend all day surfing Peeps sites!

But as for me, I am through talking about marshmallows and Peeps. It is time to take action. I wonder if I have the ingredients for a Blue Peep Pie or maybe a Choc-O-Peep Milkshake?

bye for now  I am off in search of marshmallows…

    I don’t want much, really…

I want this weather to stop changing so much and settle on spring.

Yesterday it was 70 degrees and sunny, and today a wet chilly 46!

and while I am at it…

I want my computer (or maybe it’s eBay’s software) to behave itself, so when I spend a half hour working on writing up a new eBay auction listing, it doesn’t swallow it whole without a trace.

I want to get my eBay listings built up to a point where I can make a decent income from them. I have the merchandise, it just takes so long to get the listings all written up and onto eBay.

I want to finally finish paying off my bills, so I don’t feel guilty when I want to spend money on a new CD, or to go to a movie or concert.

but what I want, really want…

I want to get things moving regarding the upgrades and repairs we are planning outside in the yard and driveway, so we can either get contractors here working, or the materials for me to do it myself — I don’t care which at this point, I am just tired of waiting for it to start.

I want my dear practical cautious husband to stop worrying about finances and give the go-ahead to these projects.

And if I am going to be doing them myself, I want a hot tub so I can relax and get rid of the muscle aches after all that sledgehammer-swinging, shoveling, lifting and wheelbarrow-pushing.

and while I am at it…

I want a new sofa for big empty space in the living room. The leather one I have picked out at Jennifer Leather. And maybe two new chairs for the living room too. A big living room is nice, but unless you plan on giving ballroom dance lessons in it, a big empty living room is just depressing.

I want a new kitchen floor, one that will actually shine, and be able to keep clean, rather than just crumbling to green powder when I try to mop it. Some new kitchen countertops and a shiny new sink would be good too.  One that actually has glaze on the porcelain, and the chrome plating on the fixtures, not worn off in places. And a stove with more than two working burners.

I want a new bathroom floor, instead of the one that has big holes where the old vinyl tiles are torn up and the subfloor is warped and water damaged from long-ago leaking pipes. A new bathroom sink would be nice, too, to replace the one that is worn through the porcelain enamel all the way to the cast iron underneath. A faucet that doesn’t leak would be good too.

but what I really want, really really want…

I want my excess weight to be gone. All of it. Now. I don’t want to wait. Yeah, I know all about sensible weight loss, taking it slow, and all that stuff. But I just want to go to sleep and wake up a size 14. I am not asking for a size 5, a 14 would be okay with me. But I just want it now.

I want to stop having to measure every bite I take, I want to go out to eat, or order a pizza if I don’t feel like cooking. I want to share a meal with my husband for a change. I don’t mean that I want to pig out, I just want to stop having to make my own carefully measured little diet meals five times a day and eat them all by myself.

    I want a personal chef.

and while I am at it…

    I want a personal trainer.

    I want an exercise buddy.

I want a TV or at least a cd player in the garage/gym.

I want a piece of cardio equipment that doesn’t make the horrible scraping sound the boring old exercise bike does.

I want something, anything, to make working out more appealing. I don’t mind getting my exercise by working hard in the yard, but until the weather makes up its mind, and we settle on what projects we are going to do in the yard, it looks like I am going to have to start exercising (yuck) indoors to get in shape.

    but what I really want,

    really, really, really want…

Is a basketful of Marshmallow Peeps!

    dammit!

    Well, I did it!

The 12-week Discovery.Com National Body Challenge ended yesterday.

And at final weigh-out I had lost 40 pounds!

    before (312 pounds, January 10th), half-way, and after (272 pounds, April 4th)

I know I don’t look too happy in the last photo, but I was cold, and Bernie was taking an awful long time focusing the camera. And this was the second time I stood for photos, the first ones being entirely too blurry to keep!

Of course, the journey is far from over for me.  I intend to continue with the nutrition plan, and as the weather gets warmer I will be increasing my activity level, both with the many outdoor projects I have planned and some supplemental exercise. It should be much easier to get myself out to the garage gym when I no longer have to spend an hour warming it up with the wood stove first!

The 40 pound weight loss is just the beginning, I hope to lose at least 60 more, which well get tme down to a level (212 pounds) where my BMI (body mass index) indicates I am merely overweight, and no longer obese. Since I view these terms as just labels, and I know that the real test is in my health and how I feel, I will decide then how much more I still want to lose. Just guessing, right now, I would like to see myself below 200 pounds. I am a  sturdily built woman, at 5’10″, large framed and very muscular, underneath the layer of extra padding, thanks to a lifestyle which has always included a lot of heavy physical labor.  When I was in high school I weighed around 150 pounds, but that was before I built a lot of the muscle that I carry. Later on in life, at 175, I still fit in the same clothes I wore in high school 25 pounds lighter!

I am also taking into account the fact that my skin has been stretched quite a bit carrying this extra weight for so long, so I don’t think I want to get quite as thin as I once was, if it means I will look like a deflated balloon.

Like I said, after I lose another 60 pounds, I will decide from there where I want to go, but for now, the first 12 weeks has me well on my way, and the new nutrition plan and revised way of eating has become second nature. The biggest and most beneficial change has been eating every 3-4 hours no mater what. I feel so much better now that my blood sugar levels, and consequently my energy levels, are more stable. I haven’t gotten back the results of the extensive set of blood tests the doctor ordered for me a couple of weeks ago, but I am sure there will be some positive changes reflected there, too.

Yep, I am proud of myself. Damned right I am! I have lost weight in the past, on occasion even more than I just lost, but I have never been this successful with sticking to a nutrition plan or a lifestlye change. That, I believe, is going to be the real key to the hardest part I have facing me — keeping it off once I lose it all!

Oh, I almost forgot to mention the really cool thing about this. I got an invitation from Discover.com, as a person in the highest weight loss group of the NBC, to send in my before and after pictures and a brief story about my experiences of the last 12 weeks for consideration for inclusion on their website! A real honor, but I think that for me, being brief is going to be more of a challenge than I experienced during the entire 12 weeks.

I think maybe I should get Bernie to take another after picture, too — one where I look a bit happier about my results!

    I love my furbabies.

They are a pain in the butt sometimes, sure, but…

    This says it all:

Give the ones you love a big hug today — whoever they are!

  • Our family has grown!

say hello to Port and Starboard!

two male Bettas “displaying” — a show of agression

trying to prove to your potential rival that you are bigger and badder obviously knows no species barriers

I put their jars next to each other just for this picture, they reside on separate shelves in the living room, in these vases which they share with with spathyphyllum (peace lily) plants:

We had a pleasant, but busy weekend. In addition to going out and buying fish, we had lots of other errands and three events to attend. I went to a gathering of local “flyladies” —  flylady.net members — at the library on Saturday afternoon, and then on Saturday night Bernie and I went to a 50th birthday party for a coworker, who is also the president of the local letter carriers union that Bernie is also an officer of.

Since I used to be a letter carrier at the same post office, years ago (how I met Bernie) that meant I got to see a lot of old familiar faces. The last time I saw most of these people was about three years ago when we went to a union sponsored outing at a baseball game of our home team — the Trenton Thunder. It was good to see everyone again saturday night.

One of the mail carriers from another office, that shares the same union local is a guy I went to college with and admired quite a bit back then. He has been battling cancer, but apparently the chemo has been effective. He was a philosophy major and the president of the national philosopy honor society Phi Sigma Tau, that I was secretary of, and was quite an intelligent and well spoken individual, married (rare enough in college) with a little baby girl he occasionally brought to class. I was very surprised to meet up with him again when I was working at the Post Office and see that he became a mail carrier too. I always figured he would end up being a professor or something. He is also very involved in the union so Bernie keeps me posted on how he is doing, but it was really nice to see him in person.

Sunday we went to a big kayak and canoe event, the annual NJ Paddlesport show. There we got to see all the new boats and gear for 2004, and gather information on different places to go kayaking. I got a pair of really nice amphibious sneaker-type shoes from Teva, and a bunch of free stuff to read. I also got a really good look at the new tandem kayak I want (saving my pennies ) It is really cool, it has a pedal mechanism so you can propel it with your feet, and steer with a rudder, as well as power it the normal way with the usual paddles, and it can be either a tandem for both of us, or just one person can use it alone. And the really cool thing is that it has an optional sail — so it can be a one-person sailboat too! It is made by Hobie, they have a great reputation for both sailboats and kayaks. Since it is over 14′ long, quite a bit larger than the single kayaks we have it will be a bit more difficult to carry in or on a vehicle, so I also checked out a light-duty boat trailer to go with it (more pennies to save…)

Last week I bought three new CD’s on eBay/Half.com, all by the Strawbs, my favorite band ever (I am going to see them in July, but that is a story for another blog) and they arrived in my mail yesterday. I am listening to one of them – ”Baroque and Roll” – right now and I am just floored by how good it is. Like fine wine, these guys just get better with age! This particular release is a colllection of their electric music re-arranged and played acoustic. Not a mere “unplugged” album, it is a beautiful example of the folk and classical influences on their music as well as the virtuosity of their playing.

So a little bit late, I leave you with this week’s adifrentdrumr’s choice weekend song lyrics – from the same album:

    Go to sleep my babies
    Don’t you wake up
The stars will keep you company
    So close your eyes
    Old Uncle Moon will smile
    His dearest sweetest dreams
And hold you in your arms
    Until the morning comes.

Dark the night not a sound
    Damp and cold frosty ground
Beside your bed the angel stands
You cannot touch his withered hands.

Damp with sweat, your mouth is dry
    Twisted branches catch the eye
Above your head the lion screams
To tear you from your moonlit dreams.

As the lion’s eyes dance before me
They are kindly, yet bloody red
I can see that he is smiling
But I cannot live inside his head.

    Tell me children
    Are you sleeping?
    Are you innocent like me?
May you never cross the line
I hope your dreams are not like mine.

So the needle stands before me
I climb inside it towards the light
Where the angel stands in glory
His sword of peace defends the night.

So the world is spread before me
As I fly high on angel wings
    But the angel is deceiving
For he is weeping as he sings.

    Early bird, morning breeze
    Spinning leaves, sleepy trees
    Gently tap the window pane
It’s good to see the sun again.

A quiet friday night. Just the way I like it.

I got a brand new, ultra comfy, adjustable computer chair today, and put it together this evening while listening to Meek’s Live Genesis Cafe. This will help increase my productivity at the keyboard a lot, I think, or at put an end to the backaches I have been having.

Ate some Chinese Takeout for dinner — Shanghai Chow Mei Fun (rice noodles with shrimp, pork, chicken, egg and veggies and hot curry flavoring, yum) – just a little bit, can’t eat much at one time anymore since I have been on this five meal a day plan for nearly 3 months.

Now I am about to go have a nice hot soak…

mmm, sweet almond bubble bath —

Too bad my sinuses are giving me trouble again and I can’t smell it.

I have a lot of stuff planned for the weekend, but I am sure I will be hanging around Xangaland a bit.

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

    AAUGH!

    This is just not  fair!

Everyone knows how much I love nature.  How much I enjoy feeding and sheltering any wildlife that wanders into my yard.  How much I respect all of the Goddess’ children…

It was bad enough that the deer ate my roses last summer, the potted plants on my front steps, and the impatiens I planted in the barrel outside my bedroom window, too.

And in the fall they stripped the bark off the brand new Ash tree I planted.

This spring they have been nibbling off every little shoot and bud emerging from the spring flower bulbs I planted in the front yard…

Now they are just pulling them up by the roots and eating the whole things!!

All along the front of the house there are fresh holes in the mulch, and hoofprints, and telltale piles of deer poo on the lawn…

    I love wildlife, I really do…

But I am begining to entertain fantasies of Bambi roasting on a spit!

mental meanderings of a sunday afternoon…

    Spring is finally here.

At least it says so on my calendar…

The Vernal Equinox has come and gone, and I feel no more balanced than I did before.

An old superstition says you can blance an egg on one end at the moment of the equinox.

Not that I would see why anyone would want to do that anyway.

I would rather just make an omelette for breakfast.

When I was in Paris a few years ago I practically lived on omelettes.

Omelettes and fresh baguettes from the bakery on the corner.

They were cheapest, and left more francs for museum admissions and Metro fares.

I was there before the Euro, in January, alone.

But I always wanted to experience Paris in the springtime.

Maybe someday I will take my husband there.

He doesn’t really have much interest, there’s no surf in Paris.

But I think he’d enjoy the City of Lights if he’d give it a chance.

On my calendar it also says March is Womens’ History Month.

A good time to feature a woman songwriter (one of the best, too)

this weekend’s adifrentdrumr’s choice song lyrics is a snapshot of Paris:

He met her in a French cafe
She slipped in sideways like a cat
    Sidelong glances
    What a wary little stray!
She sticks in his mind like that
    Saying “
    Avez-vous un allumette?”
With her lips wrapped around a cigarette
    Yvette in English saying
    “Please have this
    Little bit of instant bliss”

He’s fumbling with her foreign tongue
Reaching for words and drawing blanks
A loud mouth is stricken deaf and dumb
In a bistro on the left bank
“If I were a painter” Picasso said
“I’d paint this girl from toe to head!”
    Yvette in English saying
    “Please have this
    Little bit of instant bliss”

    Burgundy nocturne tips and spills
They trot along nicely in the spreading stain
    New chills new thrills
    For the old uphill battle
How did he wind up here again?
    Walking and talking
    Touched and scared
    Uninsulated wires left bare
    Yvette in English going
    “Please have this
    Little bit of instant bliss”

What blew her like a leaf his way?
(Up in the air and down to Earth)
    First she flusters
    Then she frays
So quick to question her own worth
    Her cigarette burns her fingertips
As it falls like fireworks she curses it
Then sweetly in English she says
    “Please have this
    Little bit of instant bliss”

He sees her turn and walk away
Skittering like a cat on stone
    Her high heels clicking
    What a wary little stray!
She leaves him by the Seine alone
With the black water and the amber lights
And the bony bridge between left and right
    Yvette in English saying
    “Please have this
    Little bit of instant bliss”

    - Joni Mitchell “Yvette in English”

***update - Monday AM: I keep trying to add the Xangazon “currently playing” box to this post, but it isn’t cooperating, so since some of you wondered –

This is a relatively new Joni Mitchell song, co-written with old friend and sometimes collaborator David Crosby. It appears on Joni’s “Turbulent Indigo” CD (1994) and also on one of David Crosby’s solo recordings from the same time period, which, incidentally, is where I first heard it.
